Dear reader,

Today, the SUPERSHINE project bids its farewell.

Since its launch in 2022, SUPERSHINE has worked to accelerate the sustainable renovation of social housing across Europe. By integrating technical optimisation, innovative financial schemes, and human-centred governance models, the project has contributed to shaping a new approachone that aligns climate neutrality with social equity and directly addresses energy poverty.

But beyond its objectives, SUPERSHINE has been a journey of transformationfrom understanding challenges to delivering practical, scalable solutions.

The project began by exploring the complexities of social housing renovation across Europe, identifying key barriers related to building performance, financing, and stakeholder engagement. Building on this foundation, partners developed and assessed a portfolio of technical and financial solutions, combining energy-efficient interventions with innovative Public–Private Partnership (PPP) models to ensure long-term viability.

These solutions were brought to life in Lighthouse Cities such as Trieste, Herning, and Riga, where real-world implementation demonstrated how integrated strategies can improve building performance while remaining socially inclusive. At the same time, collaboration with Follower Cities supported the adaptation and replication of these approaches in diverse urban contexts.

A key pillar throughout the project has been stakeholder engagement. SUPERSHINE placed people at the centre ensuring that residents, local authorities, and practitioners were actively involved through co-creation processes, strengthening acceptance and long-term impact.

And while the project comes to an end, its work continues through the solutions developed, the knowledge shared, and the communities empowered along the way.

Final pubby

SUPERSHINE presents our integrated model for social housing renovation bringing together financial innovation, energy poverty reduction, citizen engagement, and circularity.

With our Final Publication, we showcase a holistic and replicable approach that aligns environmental sustainability with social inclusion and financial viability.

Tested in our Lighthouse Cities Trieste, Riga, and Herning our model demonstrates that deep energy renovation can significantly reduce energy demand while protecting affordability. Across the pilot districts, energy consumption was reduced by more than half, with household energy costs decreasing by up to 45%.

At the same time, our approach puts people at the centre. By involving residents from co-design to co-decision, we strengthened social acceptance and ensured that solutions respond to real community needs.
