SUMMARY:Engaging Retail Lenders in Home Renovations
DESCRIPTION:Europe is in a race to achieve independence from foreign energy sources\, alleviate its citizens from rising energy prices\, and to meet its ambitious climate targets. Consuming 42% of energy and being responsible for over one third of energy-related GHG emissions\, the decarbonisation of the buildings in the EU is essential to achieve this. \nHow can we identify which buildings to renovate? How can we provide access to low cost\, long-term financing for deep renovations across Europe? \nHaving business relationships with more than 25 million EU customers\, mortgage lenders are the single most connected stakeholder group to Europe’s buildings. As of 2022\, mortgages accounted for about 80% of the lending to households. Evidently\, the mortgage is the most appropriate and widely used financing tool to provide homeowners investment capital and the opportunity simultaneously to upgrade their buildings to make them resilient against energy shocks\, more affordable to run and more comfortable and healthy to live in. \nIn this event\, the Renovate Europe Campaign and Climate Strategy (CS) will present the current state of EU buildings’ renovation efforts and the findings of the latest CS report “Engaging Retail Lenders in Home Renovation”\, calling for EU mortgage lenders to play a more proactive role in unlocking the trillions of home equity stored in the buildings owned by their clients through the voluntary uptake of the innovative instrument Mortgage Portfolio Standards (MPS). EU policymakers\, buildings experts and finance sector stakeholders will then exchange views on these subjects. \nThere is growing momentum for Mortgage Portfolio Standards as over a third of the top-30 banks in Europe already have in place a form of voluntary MPS\, or equivalent. We look forward to a lively discussion on its potential\, design and place within Europe’s decarbonisation efforts. Included in the final version of the Energy Performance Building Directive (EPBD) adopted by the EU Parliament in March 12th of this year\, Mortgage Portfolio Standards were defined as: \n“Mechanisms incentivising mortgage lenders to establish a path to increase the median energy performance of the portfolio of buildings covered by their mortgages towards 2030 and 2050\, and to encourage potential clients to make their property more energy-performant along the Union’s decarbonisation ambition and relevant energy targets in the area of energy consumption in buildings\, relying on the definition of sustainable economic activities in the EU Taxonomy.” \nIf you are interested\, please use this link to register.

SUMMARY:Webinar : INTRODUCING THE NEW EU BUILDING STOCK OBSERVATORY
DESCRIPTION:This revamp of the BSO encompasses an ambitious set of upgrades\, with the aim of establishing the platform as the central hub for European building stock data. Notably\, it will contribute to improving transparency on energy efficiency across the EU’s building stock under the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive. \nThe platform update is focused on 2 overarching goals to improve EU buildings data: \n\nensuring the EU BSO is useful across the whole policy cycle from effective target-setting to implementation\, enforcement monitoring and evaluation at both national and EU level\nimproving the platform’s user interface\, making it easier to navigate for a wide range of potential end-users including policymakers\, investors\, financial institutions\, construction and real estate industry stakeholders\, energy providers\, local authorities and researchers\n\nWith the implementation of the recast EPBD forthcoming\, the BSO will therefore serve as the central hub for data on buildings. The relaunch of the BSO and ongoing development efforts of the tool are foundational to future success to monitor progress on decarbonisation in Europe and to track Member State EPBD compliance. \nLed by partners Guidehouse\, BPIE (Buildings Performance Institute Europe)\, EURAC Research\, TU Wien and the Danish Energy Agency (DEA)\, in close coordination with DG ENER and DG DIGIT\, the newly launched effort of the BSO is part of a wider development effort to ensure the BSO becomes Europe’s central hub for reliable data on buildings. The BSO development effort is funded through the European Commission’s LIFE programme\, managed by CINEA (the European Climate\, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency). \nJoin Guidehouse and Eurac\, hosted by the Leonardo Academy’s Zero Emission Building Academy to learn about the BSO revamp effort – what has been done so far\, and what is in store in the coming months for the BSO! \nSpeakers: \n\nAndreas Hermelink\, Director at Guidehouse Buildings for sustainability\nRoberto Lollini\, Head of Research Group Energy Efficient Buildings\, Eurac\n\nHere you can find the link to register! \nStay tuned for more updates on the webinar. \n

SUMMARY:Social Housing Conference 2023
DESCRIPTION:Brought to you by Social Housing Magazine\, the Social Housing Finance Conference is recognised as the longest standing\, UK-wide\, one-day event of its kind. It brings together sector leaders and senior finance and treasury professionals from housing associations and local authorities to discuss the strategic\, operational and technical finance matters of most importance. \nThe finance world has changed exponentially since we last held this event with continuing shifting sands for the affordable housing sector and the wider economy. Policy announcements\, changes in government\, and ongoing turbulence in the financial markets has shaken up the operating environment for providers\, with one eye on the horizon for a looming recession. Increasing inflation\, higher interest rates\, changing valuations. downgrades and volatile capital markets\, the impact of the temporary rent cap\, investment into existing homes\, development and delivery\, just some of the things those holding the purse strings need to weigh up alongside balancing risk and reward.

SUMMARY:International Social Housing Festival
DESCRIPTION:International Social Housing Festival 2022 will take place in Helsinki\, Finland\, on June 14–17 and it is organized by The Housing Finance and Development Centre of Finland (ARA)\, City of Helsinki and Housing Europe. The 2022 edition of International Social Housing Festival (ISHF) explores housing as the foundation of good life. The festival highlights the role of social\, public and co-operative housing in achieving socially and ecologically sustainable living in our cities now and in the future. \nIn co-operation with Finnish main housing providers and public housing experts\, three themes will be explored: \n  \n1. People first: quality of housing as quality of living\nThe changing demographic dynamics and the shift in family types beyond the conventional nuclear family impact the way housing needs to be conceptualized. Adaptable housing solutions that can be matched with support services for different needs become the norm. This is not possible without a housing policy integrated into the wider planning strategies no matter whether their aim is a balanced urban development or to address the challenges of shrinking and rural areas. \nThe ISHF 2022 will look at ways of improving the quality of housing as a fundamental prerequisite for better quality of living. While public\, cooperative and social housing providers are the ones that have been committed for over a century\, in many cases\, to this mission\, that is not necessarily reflected in their public perception. Working with the Press to get the facts and the data straight\, countering the stigma\, will be the final pixel in the mosaic of this first theme. \n2. Achieving affordability and sustainability in housing\nThe energy transition of the housing sector is a priority towards a sustainable future. The ISHF 2022 will explore how this can be achieved without leaving anyone behind. The challenge is twofold\, on the one hand to address the highly alarming phenomenon of energy povertythat touches the lives of more than 50 million households in the European Union\, while on the other hand to ensure that the modernization cost is bearable. \nTo the latter end\, the Festival will welcome events that will showcase various experiences with financing solutions to housing\, particularly identifying the opportunities that the new role of the European Investment Bank (EIB) as the “EU’s Climate Bank” generates. \nAnother core question to be addressed is the potential of the district approach\, i.e. putting emphasis on the shifting the debate from the building level to the neighbourhood level\, in particular sustainable positive energy neighbourhoods. \nAnd since these issues put the sustainability knowhow on the agenda\, the Festival aims to be an innovation hub around construction and renovation with a strong focus on circular economy. Contributions from around the world are welcome! \n3. The right to housing: getting rid of the excuses not to guarantee it\nThe right to housing is recognised by the number of international treaties\, including article 25 (1) of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. However\, both national and local authorities have proven to be quite creative when it comes to excuses for not actually guaranteeing it to all citizens. Instead\, there is a clear finacialisation trend to be observed around the globe that seems to have set commercial rules for the policy debate around housing. \nThe ISHF 2022 aims to become an evidence-based\, practical guide on how to get ride of the excuses that seem to prevent policymakers from guaranteeing the right to housing to all. In this framework\, three main issues will be addressed. In line with the leading Finnish example\, priority will be given to abolishing homelessness but also to addressing the exclusion of arriving populations. Secondly\, the lineup of events shall illustrate in an equally prominent way the crucial role of the public sector\, particularly as far as funding\, land management and the policy framework are concerned. \nFollowing up the success of the ‘Collaborative Housing Day’ in Lyon in 2019\, the 2022 edition is going to be once again a platform that will showcase the impact of active citizenship in the ways that housing solutions are produced. Community-led housing initiatives\, including cooperative housing\, Community Land Trusts and co-housing projects from various contexts are invited to share how they secure the right to housing to their beneficiaries. \n  \nMore info

SUMMARY:5th SDEWES SEE Conference
DESCRIPTION:The main challenge for South East Europe (SEE) economies is to commit to\, and sustain the implementation of\, long-term reforms aimed at increasing competitiveness and promoting sustainable\, inclusive and balanced development\, as well as better integration between the EU Member States\, candidate and potential candidate countries and neighbouring countries. An adequate response to this challenge will certainly require using the best available scientific knowledge and constant re-evaluation of the development process in light of the scientific findings. Therefore\, it will be essential to enhance the scientific understanding\, improve the long-term scientific assessments\, strengthen the scientific capacities and ensure that the sciences are responsive to the emerging needs. \nAlong this line\, a regional series of biannual Sustainable Development of Energy Water and Environment Systems (SDEWES) conferences have been initiated to provide a venue for the researchers from the SEE region\, but also for world-wide researchers and specialists and those interested in learning about the sustainability of development\, to present research progress and to discuss the state of the art\, the future directions and priorities in the various areas of sustainable development and regional integration. \n  \nRegister
