SUMMARY:European Responsible Housing Finance Summit
DESCRIPTION:Numerous funding opportunities have been made available by the European Investment Bank and the European Union\, which complemented by Structural Funds and national and local support schemes\, have potential to partially address the problem also by making multiple funding systems for investment in social and affordable housing more coherent to the different national contexts. \nThe Annual Social and Affordable Housing Finance Summit is one of the activities of this Working Group besides the identification of investment needs\, peer-to-peer learning\, local workshops and mentoring. The Summit is also fulfilling the goals of the Liege Declaration agreed in March 2024 which called for a European platform for exchange on housing systems. \nTherefore\, in Milan\, Housing Europe and Legacoop Abitanti are bringing together housing and finance stakeholders to discuss hurdles faced by housing providers\, municipalities and companies across the continent to access funding as they look to move the Renovation Wave and the New European Bauhaus forward. \n“Our project coordinator\, Dr. Paola Zerilli\, will also be attending the event as a speaker. She will be participating in the session titled ‘Harnessing Finance (Public & Private) for Integrated Approaches to Fair Decarbonisation.’ \nFind here the full agenda  : Draft Agenda-Summit – Description – 18.11.24 (1).pdf

SUMMARY:Engaging Retail Lenders in Home Renovations
DESCRIPTION:Europe is in a race to achieve independence from foreign energy sources\, alleviate its citizens from rising energy prices\, and to meet its ambitious climate targets. Consuming 42% of energy and being responsible for over one third of energy-related GHG emissions\, the decarbonisation of the buildings in the EU is essential to achieve this. \nHow can we identify which buildings to renovate? How can we provide access to low cost\, long-term financing for deep renovations across Europe? \nHaving business relationships with more than 25 million EU customers\, mortgage lenders are the single most connected stakeholder group to Europe’s buildings. As of 2022\, mortgages accounted for about 80% of the lending to households. Evidently\, the mortgage is the most appropriate and widely used financing tool to provide homeowners investment capital and the opportunity simultaneously to upgrade their buildings to make them resilient against energy shocks\, more affordable to run and more comfortable and healthy to live in. \nIn this event\, the Renovate Europe Campaign and Climate Strategy (CS) will present the current state of EU buildings’ renovation efforts and the findings of the latest CS report “Engaging Retail Lenders in Home Renovation”\, calling for EU mortgage lenders to play a more proactive role in unlocking the trillions of home equity stored in the buildings owned by their clients through the voluntary uptake of the innovative instrument Mortgage Portfolio Standards (MPS). EU policymakers\, buildings experts and finance sector stakeholders will then exchange views on these subjects. \nThere is growing momentum for Mortgage Portfolio Standards as over a third of the top-30 banks in Europe already have in place a form of voluntary MPS\, or equivalent. We look forward to a lively discussion on its potential\, design and place within Europe’s decarbonisation efforts. Included in the final version of the Energy Performance Building Directive (EPBD) adopted by the EU Parliament in March 12th of this year\, Mortgage Portfolio Standards were defined as: \n“Mechanisms incentivising mortgage lenders to establish a path to increase the median energy performance of the portfolio of buildings covered by their mortgages towards 2030 and 2050\, and to encourage potential clients to make their property more energy-performant along the Union’s decarbonisation ambition and relevant energy targets in the area of energy consumption in buildings\, relying on the definition of sustainable economic activities in the EU Taxonomy.” \nIf you are interested\, please use this link to register.

SUMMARY:Launch event: European Energy Efficiency Financing Coalition - cooperating to upscale energy efficiency investments
DESCRIPTION:Scaling-up private investments in energy efficiency is essential to diminish the gap between available public financing and financial needs for the clean energy transition and the related energy efficiency investments\, and to help preserve public funding where it is most needed. \nPursuant to Article 30 (7) of the recast Energy Efficiency Directive (EU/2023/1791)\, the European Energy Efficiency Financing Coalition (hereafter the Coalition) is being established with a view to create a cooperation framework for action between Financial Institutions\, the EU Member States and the Commission. \nIn the margins of the Energy Council on 19 December 2023\, Commissioner Simson and the Energy Ministers of all the EU Member States signed a Joint Declaration on energy efficiency financing and the European Energy Efficiency Financing Coalition\, providing a strong political endorsement to this initiative. \nThis high-level event\, hosted by Commissioner Kadri Simson\, will formally launch the Coalition and intends to debate the future of energy efficiency financing and the perspectives for the initiative. \nYou can watch the even in live stream from this link! \n  \n

SUMMARY:Webinar : INTRODUCING THE NEW EU BUILDING STOCK OBSERVATORY
DESCRIPTION:This revamp of the BSO encompasses an ambitious set of upgrades\, with the aim of establishing the platform as the central hub for European building stock data. Notably\, it will contribute to improving transparency on energy efficiency across the EU’s building stock under the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive. \nThe platform update is focused on 2 overarching goals to improve EU buildings data: \n\nensuring the EU BSO is useful across the whole policy cycle from effective target-setting to implementation\, enforcement monitoring and evaluation at both national and EU level\nimproving the platform’s user interface\, making it easier to navigate for a wide range of potential end-users including policymakers\, investors\, financial institutions\, construction and real estate industry stakeholders\, energy providers\, local authorities and researchers\n\nWith the implementation of the recast EPBD forthcoming\, the BSO will therefore serve as the central hub for data on buildings. The relaunch of the BSO and ongoing development efforts of the tool are foundational to future success to monitor progress on decarbonisation in Europe and to track Member State EPBD compliance. \nLed by partners Guidehouse\, BPIE (Buildings Performance Institute Europe)\, EURAC Research\, TU Wien and the Danish Energy Agency (DEA)\, in close coordination with DG ENER and DG DIGIT\, the newly launched effort of the BSO is part of a wider development effort to ensure the BSO becomes Europe’s central hub for reliable data on buildings. The BSO development effort is funded through the European Commission’s LIFE programme\, managed by CINEA (the European Climate\, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency). \nJoin Guidehouse and Eurac\, hosted by the Leonardo Academy’s Zero Emission Building Academy to learn about the BSO revamp effort – what has been done so far\, and what is in store in the coming months for the BSO! \nSpeakers: \n\nAndreas Hermelink\, Director at Guidehouse Buildings for sustainability\nRoberto Lollini\, Head of Research Group Energy Efficient Buildings\, Eurac\n\nHere you can find the link to register! \nStay tuned for more updates on the webinar. \n

SUMMARY:Social Housing Conference 2023
DESCRIPTION:Brought to you by Social Housing Magazine\, the Social Housing Finance Conference is recognised as the longest standing\, UK-wide\, one-day event of its kind. It brings together sector leaders and senior finance and treasury professionals from housing associations and local authorities to discuss the strategic\, operational and technical finance matters of most importance. \nThe finance world has changed exponentially since we last held this event with continuing shifting sands for the affordable housing sector and the wider economy. Policy announcements\, changes in government\, and ongoing turbulence in the financial markets has shaken up the operating environment for providers\, with one eye on the horizon for a looming recession. Increasing inflation\, higher interest rates\, changing valuations. downgrades and volatile capital markets\, the impact of the temporary rent cap\, investment into existing homes\, development and delivery\, just some of the things those holding the purse strings need to weigh up alongside balancing risk and reward.
